Mechanical and topographic factors influencing lava dome growth and collapse

چکیده

Lava dome collapse hazards are intimately linked with their morphology and internal structure. We present new lava emplacement models that use calibrated rock strengths allow material behaviour to be simulated for three distinct units: (1) a ductile, fluid core; (2) solid upper carapace; (3) disaggregated talus slopes. first show relative proportions of depend on strength, piles can act as an unstable substrate cause collapse, even in domes high strength. then simulate sequential emplacement, demonstrating renewed growth destabilise otherwise stable pre-existing domes. This destabilisation is exacerbated if the has been weakened following e.g., through processes hydrothermal alteration. Finally, we within crater how weakening walls engender sector collapse. A better understanding important component hazard mitigation at dome-forming volcanoes worldwide.

What factors control superficial lava dome explosivity?

Dome-forming eruption is a frequent eruptive style and a major hazard on numerous volcanoes worldwide. Lava domes are built by slow extrusion of degassed, viscous magma and may be destroyed by gravitational collapse or explosion. The triggering of lava dome explosions is poorly understood: here we propose a new model of superficial lava-dome explosivity based upon a textural and geochemical stu...

Volcanic Eruptions: Cyclicity During Lava Dome Growth

Glossary andesite magma or volcanic rock is characterised by intermediate SiO2 concentration. Andesite magmas have rheological properties that are intermediate between basalt and rhyolite magmas. Silica content in andesites ranges from approximately 52 to 66 weight percent. Common minerals in andesite include plagioclase, amphibole and pyroxene. Andesite is typically erupted at temperatures bet...

Periodic behavior in lava dome eruptions

Lava dome eruptions commonly display fairly regular alternations between periods of high activity and periods of low or no activity. The time scale for these alternations is typically months to several years. Here we develop a generic model of magma discharge through a conduit from an open-system magma chamber with continuous replenishment. The model takes account of the principal controls on f...

Topographic Variability: Implications for Lava Flow Modeling

Introduction: Glaze et al. [1] and Baloga et al. [2] have both recently indicated the importance of understanding the scale of a lava flow relative to the surrounding topography in extracting inferences about rheologic changes and the interpretation of the style of emplacement. The underlying scientific issue is whether flow emplacement is controlled by the largescale topographic inclination or...

Factors influencing fetal growth.

Birth weight remains one of the most important measures we have of the health status of a population, and is a strong predictor of both neonatal mortality and morbidity. It reflects maternal nutritional status and fetal growth rates in the antenatal period. Although a large number of physiological and pathological variables can affect the growth rate, for most cases of growth-restricted fetuses...
